How To Put a Stop To Puffy Eyes

Maybe your eyes are puffed up all day long, or you suffer from under eye “bags” that age you more than your driver’s license. While there are surgical options out there, there are even more natural solutions out there which should be considered as they are safer, effective, and considerably less dangerous than an elective surgery.

What Causes Puffy Eyes?

Puffy eyes are usually caused by a build up of fluid, often referred to as an “edema”. The fluid builds up in the tissues that are around your eyes, also commonly referred as “orbits”. When too much fluid becomes trapped in these orbits, they puff out and give our eye area a swollen appearance.

Methods of Treatment

The goal of treatment is to encourage the drainage of the fluid that is causing the edema. The easiest one that anyone can do is the good old “cucumber” trick. Take two slices of cucumber and place them over your eyes. The coolness of the cucumbers helps encourage the drainage of the fluid in your eye area, and the cucumber’s aroma is relaxing and soothing.

TIP: You can also use refrigerated tea bags to try and reduce your under eye bags. When ever you make your tea in the morning, take the steeped tea bags and place them in the fridge. In as little as 10 minutes you can have cooled tea bags that will help reduce the circulation around your eye areas, and the tea bags have an astringent-quality to them which will expedite the tightening and shrinkage of the skin.

Another easy way to get rid of any under eye puffiness is to use 2 metal spoons. Place the spoons in either the freezer (dipped in water prior to placing them in the freezer) or the fridge, and then place the backs of the spoons right against your bags. While doing this, make sure you lay back and relax. You will be laying down for 5 to 10 minutes.

Here’s another quick fix: hemorrhoid cream. This cream is made to quickly educe swelling, which means that it will also work for your eye area. Just be careful not to get the ointment into your eyes.

TIP: Due to a recent change proposed by medical companies, the active ingredient that helps reduce swelling in hemorrhoid treatments is no longer available in products made in the United States. Canada, on the other hand, still has the ingredients that reduce swelling. Check with the products in your country to see if they have this ingredient (shark oil, yeast [Bio-Dyne] or live yeast cell derivatives [LYCDs]).

Prevention is Key

The best way to prevent under eye puffiness is to prevent it from happening in the first place. First, make sure that you’re getting enough sleep each night. Any where from 6 to 9 hours is recommended, but make sure you take closer to 9 hours of sleep each night rather than 6. Also try to elevate your head while you sleep. This will help prevent the fluid from building up under your eye tissues.
